The Aesthetic of Awareness is how you learn to see.

This is where perception takes form.

Artwork, images, and objects that hold something beneath the surface—moments where what you see shifts how you feel. Not full stories, not raw notes, but the space in between.

The way a color changes a mood.
The way an object holds a memory.
The way a space reveals something you couldn’t name before.

This is where awareness becomes visible.

Skewed North by Jolene Dames: Skewed North Method

Jolene Dames

en

skewednorth@substack.com
<itunes:owner><itunes:email>skewednorth@substack.com</itunes:email><itunes:name>Jolene Dames</itunes:name></itunes:owner><itunes:author>Jolene Dames</itunes:author><googleplay:owner>skewednorth@substack.com</googleplay:owner><googleplay:email>skewednorth@substack.com</googleplay:email><googleplay:author>Jolene Dames</googleplay:author><itunes:block>Yes</itunes:block>

Orientation Sessions

I’ve spent 25 years building environments designed to make people feel something—without them knowing why.

Not the overly simplified version. Not the version where I cut pieces of myself off so the work looks easier to categorize.

The real version.

Because the truth is, my work has always lived at the intersection of image, space, story, perception, and change.

I make art.
I read rooms.
I help people see what feels unclear.
I support the creative process.
I notice what is off.
I help people find the next shape of something.

Sometimes that something is a room. Sometimes it is a painting. Sometimes it is a project. Sometimes it is a life transition. Sometimes it is the feeling that something is no longer aligned, but you cannot quite name what needs to shift.

For a long time, I thought I had to separate all of these things into completely different identities. Artist. Writer. Scenic artist. Space reader. Creative guide. Teacher. Designer. Storyteller.

But the more honest answer is this:

I create images, stories, spaces, and experiences where aesthetics and awareness meet — transforming the way people see themselves, their spaces, and their lives.

That is the through-line.

So I am beginning to organize my work into clearer ways you can work with me.

Orientation Sessions

Orientation Sessions are for people who feel off course in their life, work, space, or next chapter — and need help seeing what wants to shift next.

These sessions are designed to help you find clarity, name what feels unclear, and understand what needs your attention first.

They are not about me telling you who to be or what to do.

They are about creating a space where you can see more clearly.

Right now, there are three Orientation Sessions:

Inner Compass

Inner Compass is a 90-minute orientation session for people in transition who need help seeing the next shape of their life, work, identity, creative direction, or next chapter.

This session is for you if you feel scattered, stuck, overloaded, or unsure what needs your attention first.

Together, we look at what feels unclear, what is asking to be simplified, and what direction wants to emerge.

You leave with a clearer sense of what matters now, what can be released, and what next steps would create the most movement.

This session can happen virtually or in person.

Read the Room

Read the Room is a focused virtual space reading designed to help you understand what your room is communicating — visually, emotionally, energetically, and behaviorally.

This is for someone who knows something feels off in a room but cannot quite name what it is.

Maybe the space feels heavy, cluttered, uninspiring, chaotic, stagnant, disconnected, or simply no longer aligned with who they are becoming.

Through photos, a short video walkthrough, and an onboarding questionnaire, I read the visual and energetic patterns of your space and translate them into clear, practical recommendations.

This is not a full interior design package.

It is a focused room reading — a way to see your space clearly, understand what may be creating the disconnect, and know what to shift first.

The goal is not to redesign your entire home.

The goal is clarity.

Room Recalibration

Room Recalibration is a deeper live room reading for someone who wants real-time guidance and a clear plan for making their space feel better.

This package can happen virtually or in person.

Either way, we walk through the room together. I look at the space with my trained eye for design, visual storytelling, energy, function, and emotional tone. I help you understand what is working, what feels off, and what needs to shift.

This is deeper than Read the Room because we are looking at the space together in real time. You can ask questions, show me problem areas, and get direct feedback as we move through the room.

This is not a full interior design package. I am not redesigning your entire home, managing purchases, ordering furniture, coordinating deliveries, or handling returns.

It is a guided room recalibration.

You leave with clarity, direction, and practical next steps.

Studio Sessions

I am also opening up a separate category of work called Studio Sessions.

Studio Sessions are guided creative experiences for individuals, pairs, small groups, schools, and private events.

These sessions are for people who want to make something, loosen up, reconnect with their creativity, get support on a project, decompress through art, or experience the joy of creating without pressure.

A Studio Session can be quiet and reflective, playful and messy, project-focused, intuitive, collaborative, or designed around a specific group or occasion.

It can happen in my studio, in your home, outdoors, at a school, at an event, or on-site.

This is not always a formal art class, although it can be instructional when that is what the person or group needs.

More often, it is a guided creative experience built around process, presence, experimentation, and expression.

Studio Sessions can include private creative sessions, project support, mixed media, decompression sessions, paint throwdowns, date nights, small group sessions, creative workshops, school visits, and private events.

Whether you arrive with your own project, a question, a feeling, or no idea where to begin, the session is designed to help you get out of your head, into the work, and back into creative motion.

The Bigger Picture

The simplest way I can say it is this:

Orientation Sessions help you see clearly.

Studio Sessions help you make your way into clarity.

My store, Made by Dames, is for you to bring the visual world home.

All of it is connected.

It is not about decorating, fixing, performing, or becoming someone else.

It is about perception.

It is about noticing what is asking for attention.

It is about creating enough clarity, beauty, space, and awareness that something new can happen.

That is the work I care about most.

Helping people see what they could not see before.

In themselves.

In their spaces.

In the work they are trying to make.

In the life that is asking to take shape next.

Because if something feels off, it probably is.

And sometimes, all you need is someone who can help you read what is already there.

If you would like to work with me, you can book an Orientation Session, a Studio Session, or explore artwork and objects through Made by Dames.

For more information on how to book a session, contact me.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" What began as beach cleaning became beach listening. We were creating with what had been left behind. Transforming it. Reimagining it.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

I didn’t know it at the time, but that was feng shui in motion. Clearing the old. Honoring the forgotten. Making space for the new. It’s the current of alchemy, the exchange of transformation.

That season became a creative sanctuary. We drifted through cenotes like dream creatures, shot underwater portraits, built strange and beautiful assemblages, and started a collaborative painting series we called Retro GoGo. Born from instinct, humor, heat, and play. There was no pressure to be profound—just a deep permission to be weird and free.

And maybe that’s why the Yucatán called me back. Not to revisit the past, but to reclaim the pieces of myself I’d left scattered like shells on a shoreline.
