Elyse’s Pieces: A Jewelry Making Journey
Before there were paintings, podcasts, or multi-phase exhibits—there was wire. And pliers. And tiny beads spread across a kitchen table with no plan except: Let’s make something.
Back in 2004, I started a little jewelry line called Elyse’s Pieces—named after my middle name, just for the fun of it. I made earrings, necklaces, and rings, selling them at yoga studios and craft fairs, because… why not? I wasn’t chasing a trend. I wasn’t trying to become a brand. I just loved the act of making. Of turning raw materials into something wearable, tangible, beautiful.

People often assume creativity starts with paint or talent or some grand idea. But really, it starts with inspiration. With following that spark, no matter how small, and letting it lead you into the unknown. Back then, jewelry was my way in. A gateway drug to creative freedom. A place to play without pressure. And those wirework skills I taught myself? They show up now in the assemblage work I do—every twist, every structure, every layered composition. I wouldn’t have one without the other.
That’s the thing about creativity—it’s all connected. Nothing is wasted. We build on every experiment, every playful detour, every tiny spark that led us somewhere new. Whether it’s jewelry or junk drawer sculptures or fine art, it all counts. So here’s to creating just because you can. Because play is sacred. Because inspiration doesn’t care about categories—and honestly, neither do I.
If you’ve ever felt the urge to make something—anything—follow it. You never know what skill, style, or soulful surprise it might lead to years down the line. Creativity isn’t linear; it’s layered. And every little spark matters. If you want to see how those early wire-bending days shaped the work I make now, take a peek at my current assemblage series from this post. And while you’re there, drop a note—tell me about your own creative detours. I’d love to hear what you’re building on, too. ✨
